Our eBook collections

We subscribe to three collections of electronic books as follows:

  • EBL - over 90,000 books covering a broad range of topics. This collection differs from the others in that the eBooks are required to be purchased after being viewed a certain number of times (see more about this below).
  • Ebrary - over 17,000 books covering a broad range of topics
  • Books24x7 - over 3000 books covering IT- related topics

How to find and view eBooks

  1. Do a Catalogue search in LibrarySearch
  2. Scroll down the results list and filter your results by clicking on 'online' under Narrow My Results.
  3. To view an E-book simply click on the title of the book in the LibrarySearch results. However please note the exceptions for EBL books.

Downloading and printing eBooks

You can download many of our eBooks to your iPad, iPhone or eReader. For some eBooks you can also print or download chapters or selected limited number of pages in pdf format. Our three main eBook suppliers vary in their approach as follows:

EBL allows downloads using Adode Digital Editions but often the book must be read online for 5 minutes first or if it is expensive Library approval may be required. See the EBL Online Tutorial for a demonstration of how to view and download EBL books. To print from an EBL book use the print button within the EBL interface.

Most ebrary books can be downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions for up to two weeks, without charge (except for a few titles by certain publishers). Since October 2012 you can also download parts of books in pdf format permanently - the same number of pages you are allowed to print. ebrary books can be downloaded to computers and devices including the iPhone, iPad, Kobo, Nook and Sony Reader, but not the Kindle. Downloading complete books requires installation of the free software Adobe Digital Editions, in the same way as for the EBL collection. For more information, see Ebrary's training presentation, or this blog post from Princeton University. To print from an ebrary book go to the InfoTools menu, or download to pdf and print the pdf.

Our eBooks from Books24x7 are currently only able to be viewed online, they cannot be printed or downloaded. The supplier has a new  'On Demand platform' with a 'Chapters to Go' feature as well as mobile device compatibility (Books24x7 On The Go), which we are reviewing and may introduce next year - please email us if you would find this useful.

You can tell if an eBook is from EBL, ebrary or Books24x7 by placing your mouse over the title of the book in LibrarySearch and checking the link in the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

See the picture below for an example.

Special things to note when viewing EBL books

If more than two people view an EBL book or it is a very expensive book further viewing may require approval of a Unitec Librarian. If this happens you may find that your viewing may stop until a Unitec Librarian has assessed the cost and value of the purchase/loan. You may be asked to give reasons why you require the item. If our Librarian approves the purchase/loan (which should only take a few hours at most) you will be able to view the EBL book again. They will make their decision based on the criteria set out Appendix B.3 of the Unitec Library Collection Management Policy Statement. See the EBL Online Tutorial or contact the Information Desk for further information about EBL books.
